This is Michael Mikkelsen blogger for KCCheckpoint.com coming to you with breaking news of my recent arrest. That’s right, Michael Mikkelsen arrested protesting a DUI Checkpoint. I have been protesting Checkpoints in Kansas City for two summers now. I have been detained several times, put in handcuffs, told that I can’t film, I’ve even had my “Checkpoint Ahead” sign stolen by the police.

Kansas City’s weekly newspaper The Pitch did a front page story about my DUI Checkpoint protests titled ‘Blowing Off The Cops’ and CopBlock.org also reported on what I am doing not only to expose, through freedom of the press, the rampant violations of people rights not to be searched and not to incriminate themself, but also to help people avoid these unlawful checkpoints by exercising our free speech to warn people of them.

We do that tweeting on the checkpoint locations on twitter @Kccheckpoint and also holding up signs to warn the traveling public of there checkpoints. And they are greatful that we are fighting back and will continue to fight back.

As you will see from video recently obtained from the KC Police Department. I was standing on a public sidewalk next to the entrance to the broadway bridge.

There is no audio at that beginning of the video but you will hear the officer try to claim that telling me that I am trespassing it the same thing as asking me to leave. And that me saying ‘This is a public place’ is me refusing to leave. You will hear me say over and over again that I am happy to leave.

Not only is the an obvious violation of my free speech right to hold up a sign in a public place. But also selective enforcement of this trespass ordinance because the ordinance doesn’t distinguish between someone who is driving onto this property and a pedestrian on the sidewalk of this property.

So I will need your help to fighting back and tell the police that they can not single out people for arrest because they don’t agree with their political speech. I was arrested to stop my protest and squelch my speech. They should not be arresting people to silence them and discourage others from exercising their free speech rights in a public place. Please help me fight back by donate to my legal fund.

  6. JJ says:

I like how they conveniently turn the mic off/on when they discuss certain things especially when it something they wouldn’t want to be recorded. That’s BS they should be required to have it on at all times during an arrest.

  7. JJ says:

Also where is the No Trespass sign? I know the video quality is not that great but they way the cops were talking you were standing right next to it.

  8. Kyle says:

The US supreme court has long held that an arrest that appears retaliatory, but is still has factual probabale cause; is not unconstitutional. The US Supreme court also has upheld the legality of DUI checkpoints, as long as they subscribe to a set of narrow rules.
You might be ice skating up hill, friend.

  9. MMikkelsen says:

Kyle, you’re implying some things about the facts and the strategy that are not correct.
